Explore, create and deliver

It's important to attract attention, and what better way to do it than by using vibrant and contrasting colors. The more two colors can react to one another, the better that middle area will attract the human eye. Take for example the image above. The blue collar and the yellow from the rest of the blouse create a high contrast visual separation. This separation is used to help define a centre of attention, more precisely the place that you want people to focus on.

Combinations of such colors will always get attractive results. But like many other techniques, it's important not to crowd to many colors in there. Simple combinations, will make it easier for the eye to process, and the response time will obviously be faster.

  Reading literature

Besides boosting your writing quality, books are gateways to fine detailed imaginary worlds and will enable you to transpose those environments into your work or inspire you to create new ones. Referencing subtle details from literature will engage your viewers, unconsciously evoking old, hidden feelings.

  Watching movies

Perhaps more blatant than books, movies have the power to project the viewer into fantastic realms, but exploiting more the visual and auditory senses, rather than rely on imagination. You can analyze them for both taking inspiration from great directors, or learn how to avoid compositions that don’t make the most of the subject. They are also useful in training your eyes for anticipating the perfect shots.

  Listening to music

Just like clothing, music is one of the most prominent assets of any culture of the world. They also go hand in hand, so anchoring one on the other is the most natural thing. You already set the mood for shooting sessions with music, so enriching your musical culture will result in more profound soundtracks in your creation journeys.

  Crafting things

Design dresses. Prepare dishes. Make jewellery. Learn makeup. Create whatever is your subject in your work. Learning how to build them offers you valuable insights about objects and reveals the most important details that you should feature in your photography.

  Attending cultural events

This one can help expand your photography abilities and career in ways you cannot predict. From taking photos in unknown locations and circumstances to visiting inspiring venues, analyzing work of arts and extending your network by meeting different interesting people. Really you can train yourself anywhere and get inspired from anything that’s outside your circle of comfort. Just go ahead and observe, talk, capture.

  The art of photography

Black & White photography is definitely a well discussed subject by many others and will certainly be for a long time, as each and everyone of us has it's own style that applies to this type of photography. Many people always ask me how do I manage to take such gorgeous, and the answer is pretty straight forward. It's a combination of experience, personal flavours and great lighting.

As all photographers will say, light is the key element. You can have the best set-up, the most recent and most expensive gear, but if you get the light wrong, than all is for nothing. So to you, dear reader my first tip is to always make sure you have the perfect light set-up for your shot.

Another important aspect is that you have to be able to visualise the way your shot will look. That's because your camera's viewfinder is showing you a coloured version, so it's important to translate that into black and white in your mind.

The colour of your subject and the environment is also important. You need colours that are contrasting to each other, because otherwise in black and white colours will end up looking the same.

Did you ever thought deeply about what lies behind that overused word, "photogenic"? Is there a native beauty? Is it attitude, or a good photographer? Is it pure aesthetics or expensive photographic equipment? It feels like this river of questions will not stop flowing, ever.

    A

      photogenic

subject is, by definition, a subject that

      makes

the photograph. The subject does photo-genesis, creating it without any kind of help. It's been said that models are photogenic. That is because their poses hide unpleasant features while punctuating the most aesthetic ones. But not all postures work well on all models, and there's the photographer's role to choose the angle, frame, lighting and the exact moment of capturing the image.

From my experience, there's no such thing of absolute photogenic model. There can be absolute beautiful subject with no posing knowledge, or paired with the wrong photographer and there can be perfect model-photographer pairs that create beauty together. And the more experienced or gifted they are, the results will be more stunning.

    Confucius said

"Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it"

. The photographer's duty is to see it, capture it, emphasise it and show it to the world.
